Portugal Updates Visa Rules: New Investor Visa & Faster Processing
  • Portugal Unveils Major Visa Reforms: New Investor Visa, Faster Processing, and Focus on Skilled Talent

Portugal recently introduced significant updates to its visa and immigration policies as part of a broader reform plan aimed at improving the country's immigration system. The reform consists of 41 initiatives that fall under four key pillars: immigration regulation, attracting foreign talent, immigrant integration, and institutional reorganization.

Key changes include:

1. End of the Expressions of Interest system: Applicants must now secure temporary residency before entering Portugal, as the previous option to enter as a tourist and gain residency through employment is being phased out.

2. New visa options: Portugal has introduced a Social Investor Visa, also known as the "Social Golden Visa." This allows private capital investment in social projects, such as affordable housing, to support immigrant integration.

3. Streamlining consular processes: Efforts are being made to expedite visa processing and reduce delays through more staffing at consulates and other technological upgrades. A dedicated mission has also been established to clear the backlog of immigration cases.

4. Attracting foreign talent: New measures aim to recruit highly skilled workers and students, with a focus on labor shortages and professional integration.

These reforms reflect the Portuguese government’s focus on managing immigration more effectively while maintaining a balance between openness and regulation.
