Sri Lanka High Commissioner Hosts Reception Celebrating 77th Independence Day

Sri Lanka's High Commissioner to Bangladesh, His Excellency Mr. Dharmapala Weerakkody, hosted a grand reception in Dhaka to celebrate the 77th Anniversary of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka’s Independence.

The event featured a short film highlighting Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage and progress, along with a mesmerizing dance performance by a distinguished Sri Lankan artist. It brought together ambassadors, senior military and civil service officials, notable cultural figures, journalists from prominent media organizations, and representatives of civil society.

Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. M. Sakhawat Hossain, Adviser on Labour, Employment, and Shipping, reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to deepening ties with Sri Lanka. He underscored key areas of collaboration, including trade, investment, agriculture, ICT, pharmaceuticals, and maritime connectivity.

Dr. Hossain commended Sri Lanka’s resilience in overcoming economic challenges and stressed the significance of regional cooperation through SAARC and BIMSTEC in fostering a stronger South Asia. He also reiterated the interim government's commitment to upholding inclusive democracy and ensuring free and fair elections in Bangladesh.

The reception underscored the shared vision of both nations for peace, stability, and sustainable development.
