Rokmeny Pashi from Sylhet: The World’s Second-Oldest Living Woman?
  • She is now 116 years, 4 months, and 2 days old

A woman believed to be the world’s second-oldest living person has been found in Moulvibazar. She resides in the Raubari area of Rajnagar Tea Estate, under Tengra Union. Her name is Rokmeny Pashi. According to her national identification card, she is now 116 years, 4 months, and 2 days old, making her the second-oldest living woman in the world.

Her national ID card states that she was born on October 9, 1908. Her husband's name is Bhagwan Pashi, and her mother’s name is Dhaneshwari Pashi. Her voter ID number is 5818073403863.

According to records, Ina Canabarro Lucas (born June 8, 1908) is a Brazilian nun who became the world's oldest living person after Tomiko Itooka passed away on December 29, 2024. She has been the world's oldest living nun since January 17, 2023, after the death of Lucile Randon. Ina Canabarro Lucas is currently 116 years and 8 months old, making Rokmeny Pashi the second-oldest living woman in the world.

When visiting Rokmeny's home to verify her age, her family members confirmed that the details in her national ID card are accurate. They claim she has witnessed both World Wars. However, she does not speak Bengali; she communicates in the Deshwali language.

Umesh Yadav, a primary school teacher, stated:

"When updating the voter list, I saw her name and was shocked by her age! When I visited her home and introduced myself, she recognized me."

Upon Dazzling Dawn Team visiting Rokmeny's residence, she was seen sitting in the sun, eating rice with her own hands. Due to hearing difficulties, she could barely respond beyond confirming her name. She is visibly frail with age.

It is learned that nearly 200 years ago, Rokmeny Pashi’s ancestors migrated from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, India, to the Giasnagar Tea Estate in Moulvibazar Sadar Union as tea plantation workers. Her father, Harideo, lived there. Rokmeny later married Bhagwan Das Pashi, a laborer at a tea estate in Rajnagar Upazila. They settled in the Raubari area of Rajnagar Tea Estate.

A 70-year-old neighbor, Shripati Pashi, said:

"Rokmeny got married during British rule. She has lived a long life due to her strong physical condition. She has two sons and a daughter."

The acting chairman of Tengra Union, Ram Dulari Nuniya, commented to Daily Dazzling Dawn:

"Rokmeny looks very old. Everyone in the area knows her as the oldest person. With the help of the upazila administration, we will try to determine her actual age."

Rajnagar Upazila Executive Officer Afroza Habib Shapla told to Daily Dazzling Dawn:

"We are aware of this matter and will begin work on it soon. Officials have been assigned to verify her national ID, and the Civil Surgeon’s office will be involved in determining her actual age."
