Motorists are being urged to avoid driving straight into parking spaces, as reversing out later can lead to higher fuel consumption.

Experts at ReduceMyExcess highlighted that reversing out of a bay requires more fuel, particularly when the engine is cold. They recommended that drivers practice reverse parking to build confidence and develop a fuel-efficient habit.

“If you're heading to a car park, take the time to reverse in rather than pulling straight into a space," they advised. "Reversing while the engine is cold uses more fuel, so it's best to perform this maneuver when the engine is already warm.”

FleetGo echoed this advice, explaining that cold engines burn more fuel and wear out faster. They suggested parking in a way that allows for a straightforward exit, minimizing the need for fuel-intensive reversing.

Road Tax Increases from April

From April, the standard road tax for cars registered after 2017 has risen by £5, bringing the annual fee to £195—an increase of approximately 42p per month for most drivers.

Additionally, electric vehicles (EVs) will no longer be exempt from road tax. EV owners will now pay £10 in the first year, followed by the standard £195 annual charge.

For EVs costing over £40,000, an additional £420 yearly surcharge will apply for the first five years.

As these charges are unavoidable, prospective car buyers are advised to factor in these costs when planning their next vehicle purchase.
