A murder investigation is underway after a man in his 40s was fatally shot near the Costco superstore in Croydon, South London, on Thursday evening, just after 5 PM. Police found the victim with gunshot wounds on Imperial Way. Despite treatment from paramedics, he died at the scene. His family has been notified and is receiving support from specially trained officers.
A TikTok video reportedly captured the immediate aftermath of the shooting, and witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with shoppers fleeing for safety. One lorry driver, making a delivery at the time, recounted seeing a man running across the car park when another man "opened fire 'bang, bang'," shooting the victim as he tried to escape. The witness described people screaming and diving for cover.
A forensics tent and a police cordon are now in place between the Costco car park entrance and a nearby loading bay. Specialist officers are also reportedly using a drone as part of their investigation.
Detective Chief Inspector Dan Whitten, leading the investigation for the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime Command, expressed his condolences to the victim's family and urged any witnesses to come forward with information.
