Seven foreign nationals appeared before the Kuala Lumpur Magistrates’ Court today, facing charges in connection with the abduction of a Bangladeshi businessman last month. This high-profile case, believed to be a kidnapping for ransom, underscores persistent concerns about such criminal activities in the capital.

The accused are identified as Bangladeshi nationals Sohel Rana, 40, and Sahajahan, 37, alongside Myanmar nationals Abdul Majid Abdul Malik, 25, Soforodin Fozol Korim, 25, Mokhtar Huson Zaher Huson, 26, Ismail Azita Rahman, 23, and Arafat Hussein Jamal Mustafa, 24. All seven indicated their understanding when the charge was read out by Magistrate Noorelynna Hanim Abd Halim.

However, no plea was recorded from any of the men, as the alleged offence falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court, where more serious criminal cases are heard. The prosecution alleges that the seven jointly abducted a 47-year-old Bangladeshi man with the explicit intention of demanding a ransom. The incident reportedly took place on June 26, at approximately 11:30 PM, in front of a mosque in Sentul.

They have been charged under Section 3(1) of the Kidnapping Act 1961. This severe legislation carries a hefty penalty upon conviction, ranging from 30 to 40 years’ imprisonment, in addition to caning. The strict sentencing reflects Malaysia's tough stance against kidnapping for ransom offences, an area of ongoing vigilance by law enforcement.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Iman Nurhidayah Ezani represented the prosecution. Only Sohel Rana was represented by counsel, Mr. K Komagan, while the remaining six individuals faced the proceedings unrepresented. The court has scheduled the next mention of the case for October 2, 2025. This will allow for further preparation by the prosecution and the accused, including securing legal representation for those currently unrepresented, before the case potentially moves to the High Court for trial.
