A 46-year-old cyclist has died following a collision involving three cyclists and a car on the A8 in Port Glasgow, Inverclyde. The crash happened shortly after 19:00 on Tuesday on the westbound carriageway between the Langbank and Woodhead roundabouts.
Emergency services were called to the scene after the three cyclists collided with a blue Ford C-Max Zetec. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, the 46-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other male cyclists, aged 37 and 27, were taken to hospital following the collision. The driver of the Ford was also taken to hospital for treatment but was later released.
The collision caused significant disruption on the busy A8, with the road temporarily closed while emergency services dealt with the incident and officers began investigating what had happened.
The road has since reopened, although Police Scotland continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
The incident happened on the section of the A8 between the Langbank and Woodhead roundabouts, a key route through Inverclyde.
The cyclist who died is understood to have been a member of the Johnstone Wheelers cycling club.
Following news of his death, the club paid tribute to the 46-year-old, describing itself as "devastated at the loss of one of cycling's good guys".
The tribute reflected the shock within the local cycling community following the fatal collision.
The Scottish Ambulance Service sent a significant emergency response to the A8 following the crash.
Three ambulances, four special operations response teams, a critical care team and a rapid resuscitation response team were dispatched to the scene.
Two patients were subsequently transported to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for further treatment.
The response involved specialist medical teams because of the seriousness of the collision and the injuries sustained by those involved.
Police Scotland said inquiries were ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the crash.
Officers are expected to examine the vehicles and road conditions, speak to witnesses and establish the sequence of events that led to the collision.
The investigation will also seek to determine how the three cyclists and the Ford came to be involved in the crash.
For the families, friends and fellow cyclists affected, the incident has brought renewed concern about safety for people travelling on busy roads.
