A 60-year-old Desi man from Smethwick has been convicted of terrorism and public order offences after posting messages online that supported proscribed organisations and were found to stir up racial hatred.
Moin Uddin was brought before the courts after information from members of the public alerted police to his online activity.
Counter Terrorism Policing West Midlands launched an investigation into social media posts made by Uddin between December 2023 and January 2024. Officers found that he had shared material expressing support for proscribed groups and content that was considered to be stirring up racial hatred.
Uddin, who is from Smethwick, was convicted on Tuesday, September 8, at Birmingham Crown Court. He was found guilty of three counts of supporting a proscribed organisation and two offences of stirring up racial hatred.
The case followed an investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing West Midlands, with Uddin having gone on trial at Birmingham Crown Court at the end of August.
Head of Counter Terrorism Policing West Midlands, Detective Chief Superintendent Alison Hurst, said Uddin had used social media to express support for proscribed organisations and to stir up racial hatred.
She said some of the material posted by him would have been “deeply upsetting” to others and stressed that his actions were against the law.
Detective Chief Superintendent Hurst also praised members of the public whose information helped police identify the activity, investigate the case and ultimately bring Uddin before the court.
She said the case demonstrated the importance of reporting information to police when something appears suspicious or concerning.
Uddin is due to be sentenced on November 10.
Police have urged anyone who sees or hears something that does not seem right to trust their instincts and report it confidentially through the UK’s counter-terrorism reporting service.
