Sadiq Khan: 'London is for everyone' after Trump's victory

After Donald Trump won the US presidential election, London Mayor Sadiq Khan released a statement.Vice President Kamala Harris represented the Democratic party in the election, while Trump was the Republican nominee. A candidate needs to receive more than 270 electoral votes (EV) to be granted residency in the United States, and the number of EVs available in each state varies based on its population. Trump has declared victory after winning crucial swing states including Pennsylvania and North Carolina, which resulted in more than 277 votes—more than the number required to win—even though not all of the votes have been tabulated and verified. Now, the Mayor of London has issued a message to Londoners following Trump's victory.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan shares message as Trump marks US victory

Khan described the election and Londoners' thoughts: " I know that many Londoners will be anxious about the outcome of the US Presidential election.

"Many will be fearful about what it will mean for democracy and for women’s rights, or how the result impacts the situation in the Middle East or the fate of Ukraine.

He added that the capital is a place for everyone: "London is - and will always be - for everyone. We will always be pro-women, pro-diversity, pro-climate and pro-human rights.London is a place where we’re proud of our diversity, proud of the contribution of all our communities and proud of our spirit of unity. These are some of the values that will continue to bind us together as Londoners."As part of Trump's campaign, he pledged to ban abortion rights with the Republican senate previously overruling Roe v Ward, which gave women the right to an abortion. Now, Trump plans to ban abortion at all stages including stopping abortions when it is needed for a medical emergency when it puts a woman's life at risk.Sharing what it means for the future of London, the Mayor ended his message by writing: "The lesson of today is that progress is not inevitable."But asserting our progressive values is more important than ever - re-committing to building a world where racism and hatred is rejected, the fundamental rights of women and girls are upheld, and where we continue to tackle the crisis of climate change head-on."
