Dozens of flights cancelled and hundreds delayed at London airports as thick fog sparks travel chaos

According to FlightAware data, there were 238 delays at Gatwick on Saturday, 209 at Heathrow, and 31 at Stansted. As the unfavorable weather conditions continue, cancellations have also been reported at all three airports. Heathrow alone has seen the cancellation of forty flights, while Gatwick has seen at least 26 cancellations, resulting in customers having to wait up to nine hours."Air traffic restrictions have been implemented temporarily due to fog causing poor visibility," a Gatwick representative stated.Throughout the day, there may be delays for certain aircraft. Any inconvenience is apologized for by London Gatwick. If passengers want more information, they should speak with their airline. Although it has not yet issued fog warnings, the National Weather Service has stated that it will keep an eye on the situation tonight.“It’s that time of year when people are travelling around the country a lot and there are a lot of people on the roads,” Met Office meteorologist Liam Eslick told.

“There is a lot of fog covering much of England, mainly the South East and central England, but the rest of the country is seeing quite a bit of thick fog too.

“It will be pretty murky on Saturday morning and there will still be fog patches that will take a little longer to clear.”

A couple left “frustrated and stressed” by flight cancellations have been forced to prolong their Christmas visit to family on the Isle of Man by an extra two days.

Kiera Quayle, from Colchester, Essex, was due to fly from Isle of Man Airport to London Gatwick on Friday evening with her husband after visiting his family – but their flight was delayed by three hours before eventually being cancelled at around 10pm, with their next available journey on Sunday.Manchester Airport also has flights delayed with the situation set to be mimicked across the country.

A spokesperson for Nats, the UK's main air traffic controller, told Sky: "Due to widespread fog, temporary air traffic restrictions are in place at several airports across the UK today. Restrictions of this sort are only ever applied to maintain safety.

"We continue to monitor the situation and have a Met Office expert embedded within our operation to ensure we have the latest available information. Our teams are working closely with the airports and airlines to minimise disruption."

The Met Office has advised motorists to go steady when they are driving in fog.

But lingering low cloud should start to clear on Sunday, Mr Eslick said.

Some stronger winds are forecast on Sunday which “will pick up and turn over these cloudy and murky conditions to help clear the fog”, Mr Eslick added.

Air travel has been severely disrupted since yesterday afternoon, leaving hundreds of passengers—including Umrah pilgrims—at UK airports.

Travel agents are under immense pressure to accommodate these pilgrims, but resources are limited. A agent told to Daily Dazzling Dawn, the disruptions have severely impacted Umrah pilgrims, stating that many are now facing the prospect of cancelled accommodations in Mecca due to their inability to arrive on time, resulting in significant financial losses for travel agents, most of whom are small business owners. He said that hotels in Mecca and Medina have strict cancellation policies, which can result in losses up to 50-60% of the package cost.

The further fog comes after hundreds of passengers were delayed on Friday due to the conditions, some waiting an extra three hours for their flights.

In some areas, thick fog patches could reduce visibility down to just 100 metres overnight and into Saturday, the Met Office said. “Another dull and cloudy day is expected, with widespread mist and fog slow to clear, possibly lingering across the region throughout the day,” a statement said for Saturday for London area, Daily Dazzling Dawn understand.
