Apple Unveils Live Translation AirPods, Reshaping Global Communication

Apple has introduced a groundbreaking feature in its latest product lineup: live translation for its new AirPods. This innovation is a centerpiece of a major product launch that also includes the highly anticipated iPhone 17 series and significant updates to the Apple Watch. These new technologies, powered by the company's advanced "Apple Intelligence," are set to revolutionize how people connect and interact across language barriers, while also pushing the boundaries of personal health monitoring and mobile photography.

A New Era of Hands-Free Communication-The highlight of the event was the launch of the AirPods Pro 3, priced starting at £219. Billed as "the ultimate audio experience," these new wireless earbuds feature a live translation capability that facilitates natural, face-to-face conversations. At launch, the feature supports English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish, with Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese slated for release by the end of the year.

The technology works by allowing a user to speak naturally while wearing their AirPods. The translation is then delivered hands-free, powered by a new computational audio engine and Apple Intelligence. For one-on-one conversations where only one person has the feature, an iPhone can be used as a horizontal display, showing a live transcription of the user's speech in the other person's preferred language. When the second person responds, their speech is translated back into the user’s language through the AirPods. For longer conversations, the experience is enhanced when both users are wearing their own AirPods with Live Translation enabled.

John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, stated that this innovation takes "personal audio to the next level." Beyond translation, the new AirPods Pro 3 also include advanced features such as heart rate sensing during workouts, extended battery life, improved stability and fit, and enhanced active noise cancellation.

iPhone 17 and Apple Watch: A Leap Forward in Tech and Health-Apple also unveiled its new smartphone lineup, featuring the iPhone 17 Pro (starting at £1,099) and the iPhone 17 Pro Max (starting at £1,199). According to Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, the iPhone 17 Pro is "by far the most powerful iPhone we’ve ever made," boasting a new design and a significant leap in battery life.

The new iPhones cater to the growing "selfie culture" with a front camera that features more megapixels for crisper photos. The front camera also introduces a new "Center Stage" option. This feature uses a wider field of view and a new sensor, allowing users to take landscape photos without rotating their iPhone, automatically keeping them centered in the frame.

The launch comes amid political and economic pressures, with President Donald Trump's administration advocating for manufacturing to be moved back to the United States. While the new iPhones are still expected to be produced in Apple’s major hubs in China and India, analysts have warned that a full manufacturing shift to the U.S. could take years and potentially double or triple the current price of the device.

In a move set to impact public health, Apple also announced a new feature for the Apple Watch Series 11. The company has vowed to help find one million people with undiagnosed high blood pressure within a year. The new watch features a notification system that alerts users if they are suspected of having chronic high blood pressure. Dr. Sumbul Desai, Apple’s vice president of health, explained that the tool uses data from the watch’s heart sensor and an advanced algorithm that "looks for chronic high blood pressure by analyzing how your blood vessels respond to beats of the heart." Apple is currently seeking regulatory approval for this technology.
