Sadiq Khan has extended an inviting offer to US President Donald Trump ahead of his upcoming state visit to London.

The Mayor of London has suggested taking Trump out for a curry on Brick Lane, a famous hub for Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine. Khan said he wants to introduce Trump to "the joys of our diversity" and emphasized the importance of engaging with the US president, despite his personal criticisms of him.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer invited Trump to the UK during his recent visit to Washington. However, Trump's heated exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has led some to call for the invitation to be withdrawn.

Both Khan and senior Labour figures, including Foreign Secretary David Lammy, have previously criticized Trump. While some have softened their stance, Khan opposed Trump’s first state visit in 2019. Now, he supports a second visit, believing it could be an opportunity to challenge Trump’s views on the UK.

During Trump's previous presidency, he labeled Khan a "stone-cold loser" who should focus on tackling crime in London. In response, Khan called Trump a "poster boy for racists."

Speaking to LBC, Khan reaffirmed his views on Trump, stating they remain unchanged. However, he sees the visit as an opportunity to change perceptions.

"If he comes to London, I’d invite him to Trafalgar Square, maybe for St. Patrick’s Day, Lunar New Year, Eid, or Diwali celebrations," Khan said. "It’s important to bust myths and show that diversity is a strength, not a weakness."

He extended the invitation further, suggesting Trump and his team visit a place of worship and experience the city's multiculturalism firsthand.

"A lot of prejudice comes from pre-judging," Khan added. "London’s diversity is one of its greatest strengths, encompassing not just religious and ethnic minorities, but people of different sexual orientations as well."
