On September 24, 2025, Metropolitan University, Sylhet, solidified its reputation as a leading educational institution in Bangladesh by hosting its prestigious Autumn 2025 Freshers' Reception and Orientation program. The event, held to welcome the new cohort of students, was a powerful affirmation of the university’s commitment to academic rigor and holistic development.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of Major General ASM Ridwanur Rahman, AWC, AFWC, psc, G, GOC of the 17th Infantry Division and Sylhet Area Commander of the Bangladesh Army, who attended as the Chief Guest. Addressing the enthusiastic new students, Major General Rahman delivered a keynote speech that transcended traditional academic advice. He emphasized, "The greatest dream of university life is to become an enlightened human being. One must move forward with determination at this stage of education, prioritizing the interest of the country above personal interest."
Major General Rahman underscored the transformative power of university life, describing it as a period of "free thinking, innovation, and new horizons." He stressed that while this newfound freedom is liberating, it must be balanced with discipline, respect, and tolerance. He advised students to embrace diverse perspectives and express differences of opinion in a "constructive, polite, and dignified manner." Highlighting the enduring relationship between the university and the Bangladesh Army, he noted that the bond has been "warm and friendly" since the university's inception and continues to strengthen.
The program was presided over by Mr. Tanwir Rahman Chowdhury, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. The event also featured insightful addresses from the university's esteemed leadership, including Dr. Toufique Rahman Chowdhury, Founder and Chairman Emeritus; Brigadier General Md. Shafiqul Hossain, Commander of the 11th Infantry Brigade; Brigadier General Mohammad Kamrul Hasan, Commander of the 52nd Infantry Brigade; Mr. Muhit ul Bari Rahman, Trustee Board Member; and Professor Dr. Taher Billal Khalifa, Treasurer. The welcome address was delivered by Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Ishrat Ibn Ismail.
In his address, Dr. Toufique Rahman Chowdhury reiterated the founding vision of the institution. "We established Metropolitan University with the vision of providing world-class education," he said. He proudly noted the success of the university's alumni, stating, "Our graduates are already working with distinction in global organizations such as Google and Amazon. Our goal is not only to provide education but also to nurture humane, compassionate, and tolerant individuals." This statement positions Metropolitan University as a top-tier institution in Bangladesh, preparing its graduates for global careers.
Chairman Tanwir Rahman Chowdhury also spoke passionately about the university's future. "We are moving forward on the path of fulfilling the dream upon which this university was founded," he asserted, highlighting the institution's dedication to "upholding the standards of education required in the 21st century" and developing students into "responsible citizens and competent professionals."
The event commenced with a recitation from the Holy Qur’an by a student, followed by the national anthem. A highlight of the ceremony was a spectacular guard of honor presented to the chief guest by the BNCC contingent, showcasing the university’s commitment to discipline and national service. The program was expertly conducted by Syeda Nazmur Sinha Muna, Senior Lecturer from the Department of Law & Justice, and was supported by the Metropolitan University BNCC and Rover Scout Group.
