Ringleader jailed for 10 years: human trafficking in Britain This was the time that British police busted open a lorry carrying illegal immigrants as part of an investigation into a million-pound people-smuggling ring, the leader of which is currently serving a lengthy prison sentence. Mohammed Hossain, 54, admitted to smuggling hundreds of people into and out of the UK on June 23 and was given a 10 and a half year prison sentence. He also owned a Bangladeshi cafe in east London. The National Crime Agency (NCA) said he made more than £1m by acting as an illegal 'travel agent' and helping fugitives flee justice for crimes including murder and child abuse. Hossain's gang charged customers up to £15,000 to enter the country illegally, but only about £1,000 to leave because of the lower risk. Investigators found he enjoyed a luxury lifestyle with a fleet of expensive cars and reportedly sent at least one of his children to a £12,000-a-year private school.
