Four individuals were "sprayed with an unknown substance" on the campus of the University of Greenwich.
Shortly after midnight, police were summoned to the university on Avery Hill Road after hearing complaints of a man being beaten and doused with the unknown substance.
Before authorities discovered three other individuals who had also been sprayed with the non-toxic material, emergency personnel discovered a man who had suffered head injuries.
It is thought that none of the victims sustained injuries that would have changed their lives or posed a threat.
According to the Met Police, urgent investigations are still underway and no arrests have been made. There is still evidence of a crime scene.
A spokesman for the university said: "We can confirm we are assisting the police following an incident last night at our Avery Hill campus. The entrance to the campus was closed briefly, but has now re-opened.
“We can confirm that none of those injured in the incident were University of Greenwich students.”
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “On Tuesday, police were called to Avery Hill Road following reports that a man had been attacked and sprayed with an unknown substance.
“Officers attended the scene alongside the London Ambulance Service who treated a man for head injuries on scene before taking him to hospital.
“Whilst conducting enquiries on scene, officers found that three other people were sprayed with the substance.
“Tests were carried out and it was found that the substance was non-toxic. None of the victims suffered any life-changing/threatening injuries.
“At this early stage, there have been no arrests and urgent enquiries are on-going. A crime scene remains in place.”
