The Education Ministry informed the Rajya Sabha on December 18 that approximately 136,921 Indian students are currently pursuing education in the United Kingdom (UK).
While the United States remains the top destination for Indian students, the UK has experienced the most significant growth, with Indian student numbers soaring by 273.9%—from 36,612 in 2019 to 136,921 in 2023, according to a Times of India report.
This surge is largely attributed to the UK’s world-class universities and the introduction of the Graduate Route Visa, which has proven to be a game-changer. Between 2021 and 2023, Indian students accounted for 42% of all recipients of this visa.
Data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) highlights a 39% increase in Indian student enrollment during the 2022-23 academic year, reaching 173,190 students. For the first time since 2018, India has surpassed China as the leading source of non-European Union students in the UK.
According to the International Consultants for Education and Fairs (ICEF) Monitor, over 16,185 student visas were issued to Indian nationals between April and June 2023. This aligns with the UK's goal of hosting 600,000 international students by 2030.
The UK government’s initiatives, including the Graduate Route Visa and the India-UK Mutual Recognition of Qualifications agreement, have played a key role in attracting Indian students. These policies offer opportunities for academic growth and successful post-study career prospects, making the UK a preferred destination for higher education among Indian students.
