Donald Trump has stated that he has no intention of deporting Prince Harry from the United States, remarking that the royal already has “enough problems” with his wife.
The former U.S. president took a swipe at Meghan Markle while addressing the Duke of Sussex’s ongoing legal battle over his immigration status.
On Friday, Trump said, “I don’t want to do that. I’ll leave him alone. He’s got enough problems with his wife. She’s terrible.”
In his 2023 memoir Spare, Prince Harry, now 40, admitted to using cocaine as a teenager and experimenting with cannabis and psychedelic mushrooms.
Following these revelations, the Heritage Foundation, a conservative U.S. think tank, questioned whether Harry had been dishonest in his visa application or had received preferential treatment from Joe Biden’s administration when he moved to California after stepping back from royal duties in what became known as "Megxit."
The organization pursued legal action against the Department of Homeland Security after its Freedom of Information Act request to access Harry’s immigration records was denied, arguing that the matter was of significant public interest.
The case was ended in September 2024 after a judge decided that Harry had a "legitimate privacy interest in his immigration status," meaning his application would remain private.
However, the matter will be reopened in a federal court in Washington, DC, on Wednesday.
The 43-year-old Duchess of Sussex, who backed Democratic opponent Kamala Harris in 2020, has not been a favourite of Republican Trump, who has previously stated that he "wouldn't protect" the duke.
DHS asks applicants for US visas if they have ever been a drug addict, abused drugs, or broken any laws pertaining to controlled substances.
Although the kind of visa Harry asked for has never been verified, they may still be eligible for a waiver if they respond in the affirmative.
