The Conservative Party has proposed a new policy to deport all foreign nationals in the UK who are convicted of any crime.

The plan involves amending the government’s borders bill to remove the current rule that only mandates deportation for foreign criminals sentenced to at least one year in prison. The amendment, which would require support from Labour MPs, also seeks to override exemptions previously granted by the European Court of Human Rights, making it easier to deport offenders.

The policy would apply to all foreign nationals, including asylum seekers and those convicted of immigration-related offences.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp described the proposal as “simple,” but refugee organizations strongly criticized it as unrealistic.

Tim Naor Hilton, CEO of Refugee Action, called it “terrifying” and “ludicrously unworkable,” arguing that it would lead to the deportation of people fleeing war and persecution who have no legal route to safety.

Amnesty International UK urged the government to reject the amendment and repeal recent immigration laws that undermine international obligations. The group’s migrant rights director, Steve Valdez-Symonds, condemned the proposal as “a blatant commitment to hostility toward human rights.”

The Tories are also pushing for an amendment to block visa applications from countries that refuse to take back their own citizens, including criminals, by altering section 24 of the Immigration Act 1971.

Imran Hussain of the Refugee Council warned that the policy would criminalize refugees, leave people stuck in detention, and create “chaos and huge costs.”

Philp defended the plan, stating: “We can’t allow endless appeals and delays. The government has a duty to protect British citizens from dangerous offenders. If a country refuses to take back its own citizens—including criminals—the UK must stop issuing visas to people from that nation.”
