Staged 'mosque scuffle' clip fans sectarian claims in India

March 13, 2025

During the holy month of Ramadan, misleading posts falsely claimed that a video depicted a Hindu man being assaulted inside a mosque. However, the footage is actually part of a longer, scripted video designed to promote social harmony.

A post on X from March 7, 2025, alleged that a Hindu man was attacked by Muslims after attending an iftar gathering to promote brotherhood. The clip shows men wearing Muslim skullcaps seemingly attacking a man dressed in saffron robes, a color often associated with Hinduism. Similar claims also appeared on Facebook and other platforms.

However, a reverse image search revealed that the video originated from a longer YouTube video posted on April 6, 2024, titled: "When a Hindu Sanyasi (Monk) goes to a Muslim’s Masjid (Mosque) for Iftar? Hindu vs Muslim Social Experiment." The widely shared clip corresponds to a segment starting at the 1:01 mark, but crucial parts indicating that the video is staged were omitted.

At the 15-second mark of the full video, a disclaimer clarifies that it is a social experiment. Towards the end, actors portraying Muslims step in to stop the fight, and the video concludes with everyone participating in the iftar meal together.

The YouTube channel PrankBuzz, which has a history of producing similar staged content, created the video. The actor playing the Hindu man has also appeared in other scripted videos.

Devraj Das, an actor and co-founder of the channel, told AFP that the video had been misrepresented with false communal claims. He explained that it was filmed with permission from the mosque authorities and was intended to demonstrate Hindu-Muslim unity against religious hatred.
