A shocking case of domestic violence involving a British Asian couple culminated in their arrest in Bolton, following their conviction for the attempted murder of the husband’s stepmother. Wasif Hussain, 21, and his wife, Nabela Tabassum, 19, were found guilty at Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday, March 27, of carrying out a “calculated and frenzied attack” in Kings Norton, Birmingham.
The pair’s actions on the evening of January 29 last year were particularly disturbing, as they wore giraffe animal masks during the assault. The attack, captured on a home security camera, provided irrefutable evidence of their brutality, Daily Dazzling Dawn understand.
Detective Inspector Laura Allen of West Midlands Police's public protection team condemned the attack, stating, “This was a calculated and frenzied attack on a defenceless woman using weapons including a knife and hammer. They are set to spend many years behind bars when they next appear in court for sentence.”
The court heard how Hussain struck his stepmother’s head with a hammer, while simultaneously strangling, punching, and stabbing her. Tabassum played a crucial role by restraining the victim during the assault. Despite suffering severe stab wounds and defensive injuries, the victim managed to escape further harm by convincing the couple to allow her to retreat upstairs, where she locked herself in a room and called for help.
Immediately after the attack, Hussain and Tabassum fled Birmingham, triggering an urgent police manhunt. Officers successfully tracked them down and apprehended them in Bolton in the early hours of the following day.
The motive behind the attack appears to stem from a domestic dispute. The couple, who were reportedly angered by accusations of neglecting household chores and treating the family home like a hotel, “snapped” when asked to leave the residence.
The case has deeply disturbed the community, highlighting the devastating consequences of escalating domestic tensions. The couple, both of British Asian heritage, will be sentenced on Wednesday, May 21, and are expected to receive substantial prison sentences.
