The closing date for a Morrisons store in Croydon has been confirmed, as the supermarket chain carries out widespread closures across the UK.

On March 24, Morrisons announced plans to shut down 17 of its convenience stores and 52 in-store cafés. Additionally, the retailer will be closing several in-store services such as meat and fish counters, some pharmacies, and all of its Market Kitchen outlets. These decisions are part of a broader strategy to redirect resources into other areas of the business.

One of the stores affected is the Morrisons Daily on Featherbed Lane in Selsdon, which is scheduled to close on Wednesday, April 16.

Morrisons CEO Rami Baitiéh addressed the closures, stating: “In most locations, the Morrisons Café has a strong future, but there are a few that face particular local challenges. In those cases, unfortunately, closing and repurposing the space is the most practical decision.

“Market Street continues to be a key point of difference for Morrisons, and we are fully committed to maintaining it.

“However, as we modernize, it’s necessary to make changes to parts of the business model that are simply no longer financially viable.

“In some locations where we are closing cafés or service counters, we’re exploring partnerships with third-party providers to introduce more relevant specialist services.

“These changes, while relatively minor in the context of the overall business, are not decisions we take lightly. We understand the disruption and uncertainty this may bring to some of our colleagues, and we are fully committed to supporting them throughout the transition.”

Other affected sites in South London include the cafés at Morrisons stores in Sidcup Westwood Lane and Erith, although their exact closing dates have yet to be confirmed.
