At least two people were killed and 54 injured — including children — in a Russian missile and drone strike on Kyiv overnight, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Falling drone debris sparked multiple fires across the city, and authorities fear some individuals may still be trapped beneath the rubble of a destroyed residential building.

Later updates from Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (DSNS) reported the death toll had risen to nine, with 63 people injured based on preliminary figures.

The attack also hit Kharkiv, in the country’s northeast, where local officials reported at least two injuries and damage to private homes.

This latest wave of strikes came just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, accusing him of undermining peace efforts. Zelensky had recently reaffirmed that Ukraine would never recognize Russian control over Crimea — a region annexed by Russia in 2014.

The full-scale invasion launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2022 has left Moscow in control of about 20% of Ukraine’s territory.

In a social media statement, Klitschko said six children and a pregnant woman were among the injured in Kyiv. He noted that fires broke out in six different areas and confirmed that people were still believed to be trapped beneath rubble in the city’s Svyatoshynskyi district, which was the hardest hit.

Footage circulating online appears to show missiles striking Kyiv and igniting massive fires. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s air force warned that nearly all regions of the country were at risk of air attacks.

The Russian military has not issued a response to the reports.
