A 28-year-old Bangladeshi university student has been fined RM5,000 by a Magistrate's Court in Kuala Lumpur today, Friday (May 9), after admitting guilt to outraging the modesty of a female American pathologist on a Light Rail Transit (LRT) train.

Magistrate S. Mageswary handed down the sentence to Rahman Md Moshiur, ordering a two-month jail term if the fine is not paid. Rahman was charged under Section 354 of the Malaysian Penal Code for using criminal force with the intent to outrage the modesty of the 26-year-old woman. The incident took place on January 9 at approximately 9:00 am on an LRT train en route from the Universiti station to the Bangsar station.

The charge under Section 354 of the Penal Code carries a potential punishment of up to 10 years imprisonment, a fine, whipping, or any combination thereof.

The prosecution in the case was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Farhana Mohamad Poad. Rahman Md Moshiur appeared in court without legal representation. Following his plea of guilty, Magistrate Mageswary imposed the financial penalty with the stipulated alternative jail term.

This court decision highlights the seriousness with which the Malaysian legal system treats offences concerning the safety and personal boundaries of individuals, particularly within public transportation environments. It serves as a clear indication of the legal repercussions for actions that violate the modesty of others.
