At least 18 passengers were injured early Saturday while fleeing a Ryanair plane that caught fire on the runway in Majorca.
Footage from Palma Airport shows holidaymakers leaping from the aircraft’s wing onto the tarmac before running away.
The plane was preparing for takeoff when the crew raised the alarm about a fire shortly after midnight. The cause of the blaze and the flight’s intended destination remain unknown.
Several ambulances arrived quickly, and six passengers were transported to hospital with injuries described as minor.
An airport worker, sounding confused in a walkie-talkie exchange, said: “Do you know the plane has emergency exits?” as passengers were seen jumping to the ground.
He continued: “Plane about to depart from apron ten or eight — now people are jumping off the wing. Something’s going on, they’re evacuating. Firefighters are coming.”
According to local media, the situation was swiftly brought under control, and most passengers disembarked in an orderly manner.
A spokesperson for the regional emergency response centre confirmed: “We received an alert about a fire on an aircraft on the ground at Palma airport at 00:36am today.
“Four ambulances were dispatched — two basic life support units and two advanced life support units.
“Eighteen people were injured and treated, with six taken to hospital. All injuries were minor,” the spokesperson added.
