A poignant memorial event marking the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide was held today at Ipswich Town Hall. The solemn occasion, organized by Ipswich Borough Council in collaboration with four local mosques, drew a diverse attendance of people from all religious backgrounds, united by a shared commitment to preventing genocide worldwide.
Speakers at the event emphasized the urgent need to halt atrocities globally, drawing parallels between the Srebrenica genocide and current conflicts. "What happened in Bosnia is now happening in Gaza," stated one speaker, "but for a peaceful world, we must stop all genocides, anywhere in the world." They further highlighted that the Bosnian genocide remains "Europe’s only acknowledged genocide since the Second World War."
The event commenced with a recitation from the Holy Quran. Dignitaries present included Ipswich Mayor Cllr. Stefan Long, who delivered a speech, and Leader of Ipswich Borough Council Cllr. Neil McDonald, who offered an official welcome.
Young speaker Mahfuza Siddiqi and human rights worker Shoomi Chowdhury powerfully articulated the necessity of ending genocide, urging individuals from all backgrounds to raise their voices against such atrocities. Representatives from the four mosques also addressed the attendees: Fryad Shamal (Masjid Al Taqwa), Moshud Ali (Shahjalal Masjid), Shakar Kawa (Narwachi Masjid), and Nurul Islam Chowdhury (Ipswich Mosque).
Local MP Jack Abbot also attended the event, expressing his agreement with the public's fervent call to stop all genocides.
