More than 30,000 people are expected to take part in a protest march and enjoy a variety of performances at a trans pride event in East Sussex this weekend.
Trans Pride Brighton (TPB), which began in 2013 as the first event of its kind in the UK, has grown significantly over the years. According to the organisers, the number of attendees has doubled every three years — a testament to its increasing popularity and importance.
The celebrations kicked off on Friday with events held across 19 pubs throughout the city. On Saturday, the main protest march will begin at midday, followed by an afternoon of entertainment featuring dozens of performances on two stages in the city centre.
The organisers say the goal is to inspire people to support and celebrate trans lives and gender diversity, and to help create positive change. Donna, one of the organisers at TPB, said:
"It’s grown hugely — it’s doubled in attendee numbers every three years, which is a huge source of pride and also a big responsibility. It’s a lot to organise every year, but I think we’re doing really well. Everything is more or less in place; there are always last-minute things, but we just get on with it and make sure it’s a fabulous day for everybody."
She also highlighted that the event is run entirely by volunteers and funded through donations rather than corporate sponsorships.
"It’s a hugely enjoyable event as well as being hugely important. All the volunteers are very proud of what we’ve achieved, and it’s really positive to see," Donna added.
Trans Pride Brighton describes itself as offering "a great day where trans people, friends, allies, and family can meet and have an amazing time in a fun and safe space."
