The peaceful community of Bethnal Green has been left in shock after an elderly woman was found battered to death at her home, leading to the swift arrest of a man known to the victim.
Police and London Ambulance Service were called to an address on Russia Lane at approximately 9 pm on Thursday, following reports of a woman suffering a serious head injury. Upon arrival, emergency services discovered the 73-year-old pensioner and tragically, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Metropolitan Police have since launched a murder investigation, with a 45-year-old man arrested in connection with the woman's death. He remains in police custody as inquiries continue. Detectives have confirmed that the victim and the arrested man were known to each other. The victim's next-of-kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers during this difficult time. A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place to determine the exact cause of death.
Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke, who oversees the Central East Command Unit, addressed the public, stating that police and forensic teams are working at a "pace" to understand the full circumstances of the "tragic death."
Reassuring local residents, Detective Chief Superintendent Clarke stated, "This is believed to be an isolated incident, with no wider risk to the general public. However, residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area over the coming days."
She urged anyone who may have information, or who saw or heard anything suspicious in the hours leading up to the incident on Thursday evening, to come forward and assist with the investigation.
The tragic incident has cast a shadow over the usually quiet residential street, and police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them via 101, quoting CAD 7726/14AUG, or to remain anonymous by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
