Two people have been killed and several others injured after a terror attack outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall, Manchester, on Yom Kippur.
The attacker drove a car into the public before stabbing worshippers. Wearing what appeared to be a bomb vest, he was prevented from entering the synagogue by the “immediate bravery” of security staff and congregants. Police shot him dead just seven minutes after the first emergency call at 9:31am
Authorities confirmed the device was not viable but declared a “marauding terror attack” response. Four victims remain in hospital with serious injuries.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer returned from Denmark to chair an emergency Cobra meeting, condemning the “horrific incident” and pledging stronger protections for the Jewish community. King Charles and the Prince and Princess of Wales also expressed their shock and solidarity.
The Community Security Trust called the attack “appalling,” while local Jewish leaders described it as the culmination of rising antisemitism. Police patrols have been stepped up near synagogues across the UK.
