An Orange Order march in Portadown, Northern Ireland, has been delayed after a large crowd gathered to block Garvaghy Road, the planned route through a predominantly Catholic and nationalist area.
The procession had been authorised following a court decision allowing 35 members of the Orange Order to take part in a silent march. The decision followed years of restrictions on the route, which has a long history of controversy and tension.
On Sunday morning, protesters gathered along Garvaghy Road and linked arms to prevent the procession from moving forward. Police officers were present at the scene and urged protesters to leave the road, warning that obstructing a lawful procession could result in criminal charges.
The Orange Order members had gathered at Drumcree Church, their starting point, but had not proceeded while discussions with police continued.
The situation has drawn reactions from political leaders in Northern Ireland and the wider UK and Ireland. Unionist politicians have argued that the court decision should be respected, while nationalist and republican representatives have criticised the decision to allow the march through the area.

The Irish government said its priority was to avoid a return to divisions of the past and highlighted the importance of preserving the progress made under the Good Friday Agreement.
