  • Police Scotland has confirmed a 12-year-old girl died after being struck by a double-decker bus on Lauchlan Way in Kilwinning, as officers appeal for witnesses quoting reference 1484.

A 12-year-old schoolgirl has died after being struck by a double-decker bus on Lauchlan Way in Kilwinning, North Ayrshire, Police Scotland has confirmed. The fatal collision happened at around 1.10pm on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, during the school lunchbreak, and the girl was pronounced dead at the scene despite the rapid arrival of specialist ambulance crews. Her family has been informed, but Police Scotland has not yet publicly named the child, meaning the question of exactly who she was remains unanswered at this stage.

What Police Scotland Has Confirmed- In a statement issued after the crash, a Police Scotland spokesperson set out the established facts with precision. "Around 1.10pm, on Tuesday, 3 November, 2026, we received a report of a crash involving a 12-year-old female pedestrian and a bus on Lauchlan Way," the spokesperson said. "Emergency services attended, but the 12-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. Her family is aware. There were no reports of any other injuries and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances."

Daily Dazzling Dawn understands the girl is believed to have been a pupil at Kilwinning Academy, though North Ayrshire Council has not confirmed this publicly. The council said only: "We are aware of a serious road accident in Kilwinning, and we are working with Police Scotland." The Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed it received a call at 13:08 and dispatched two ambulances, two special operations response teams and a critical care team to the scene.

Scene Sealed Off as Investigators Work-Traffic officers closed Lauchlan Way, a busy route through the heart of the town, for several hours while forensic work took place. Blue police screens were erected inside a lane on the main street, investigators were seen examining the bus and the roadway, and a heavy-duty tow truck was later called in to remove the double-decker. The road has since reopened, and Police Scotland has confirmed no other injuries were reported.

The death has left Kilwinning in visible shock. A parent told journalists that their son was leaving school for lunch when the collision happened. "My son was heading for his lunch from school and heard it happen. He heard screams," the parent said. "I think everyone standing nearby got a fright and was left traumatised. It's just terrible." Another resident told Daily Dazzling Dawn: "It's literally your worst nightmare come true as a parent. You just can't imagine getting that call. As a community we are in shock."

Kilwinning Councillor Joe Cullinane said: "Clearly, it's a tragic incident and all of our thoughts are with the family and friends." An onlooker added: "It's just so tragic to think someone so young has lost her life in this way."

Appeal for Witnesses- Sergeant Stewart Taylor, who is leading the appeal, said: "Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the girl who died at what is an extremely difficult time for them. We would ask that anyone with any information contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference 1484 of Tuesday, 3 November, 2026."

Officers are working to establish the full circumstances of the collision, including the bus's speed and movements in the moments before impact. Witnesses, including drivers with dashcam footage from Lauchlan Way around 1.10pm, are urged to come forward. Police Scotland has not indicated whether any arrest or charge has been made, and the investigation remains open. Further updates, including any public naming of the girl once her family has been consulted, are expected in the coming days.
