Four Bengali MPs who are became part of the mainstream politics in the UK where both Rushnara Ali MP and Tulip Siddique MP and two others became good role models for young generations Bengali to follow and become proud of!
In the UK Bengali first three Bengali candidates were nominated by three different political parties in 1997. The Barrister Charles Madani Mannan from the labour party in Christ Church, Kobir Chowdhury by conservative party in Bethnal Green and Bow and Syed Nurul Islam by LibDem in Bethnal Green and Bow, Abdul Khan selected from Portsmouth by the labour party, Cllr Ohid Ahmed was selected by the Labour party but didn't go for the election! The first Sylheti born Bengali/ British was elected as an MP from Bethnal Green and Bow in 2010 later followed by Tulips Siddique MP, Rupa Haq MP and later Asana Begum MP. The first three Bengali MPS with proper track record of coming from the party system but accept Apasana initially from Moment Tarm and working for an independent mayoral office.
In 1987 late Ex- Cllr Jan Alam stood as a candidate against the seating MP Lord Peter Shore MP where only Unions and General Management Committee members were eligible to vote for selecting party candidates and one member one vote was induced later by the Labour party. Jan Alam without consultation with Bengali part membership he made the decision to challenge seating MP Peter Shore in 1987 despite some of us GMC members requested him to step down but his reply was going to step down on 2nd round of voting but on the first round Jan Alam got only 4 votes and he was out of the race between 4 candidates and finally Peter Shore MP got over 51% without hesitation but initially Peter Shore MP was worried against Jil Cove who was chairperson of the GMC and she and Phil Maxwell and Co used to control the labour party for some time.
In 1991 once again Pater Shore MP was challenged by Rojon Uddin Jalal dispit requested by many not to challenge Peter Shore MP but Rojon Uddin Jalal started his own grave by challenging Peter Shore MP where Peter Shore MP used like Rojon Uddin Jalal where all Peter Shore MP people got upset with Rojon Uddin Jalal plus Jil Cove group was upset with Rojon Uddin Jalal from starting of Rojon Uddin Jalal become member of the labour party and Kumar Murshid was most feverate person to getting nominations by left wing of the part including Jil Cove and Phil Maxwell but Rojon Uddin Jalal didn't belong to any wings of the labour party but he started his own wing by mobilisation of Bengali membership and Rojon Uddin Jalal luck was not in his favour which number negative publicity against him. Also Rojon Uddin Jalal to achieve his political ambition which he is using Deputy Leader Paul Uddin name and fax a letter to Evening Standard from one his loyal friend Jamal factory but after phone calls from labour group officer which Jamal admitted Rojon Uddin Jalal use his fax machine sending a fax. The labour party started investigating against Rojon Uddin Jalal and interviewed Rojon Uddin Jalal. The labour party asks local government labour Whip to take appropriate opposition against Rojon Uddin Jalal labour group Chief Whip put forward a motion to the labour group to suspend Rojon Uddin Jalal from the labour group but Rojon Uddin Jalal fiction of the labour Cllrs put forward amendment to suspend Rojon Uddin Jalal for three months and including Rojon Uddin Jalal voted for such amended and the amendments getting 22 vote and Chief Whip motion getting 21 votes in favour of parement suspension!
Later Rojon Uddin Jalal got arrested by police for fighting at the local pub and due to publicity which labour party became worried about Rojon Uddin Jalal getting nominations from the labour party which going to have a affected on other part of the country and the labour party initially imposed all women shortlist candidates but the labour party was challenged and Peter Shore MP try his best to find away later Rojon Uddin Jalal to become an MP but such proposals was rejected by Rojon Uddin Jalal by thinking the local majority membership was under his control and the labour party imposed 4 candidates on local part to select a candidate from where Rojon Uddin Jalal and GMC Chairman Dr Nick Fox's who was joint favourite both was out of the labour party shortlist candidates.
The Bengali labour party leaders and activists meeting was arranged at the Dildad Restaurant where they agreed to call the final to make decisions decisions to make decisions to support a candidate amongst the imposed shortlist candidates but before meeting to be arranged Rojon Uddin Jalal made a decision by myself to support Dr Sam Abbrinton only White candidates on the shortlist, Abdul Mukit Chunu MBE started supporting Onna king and all other where people was confused and kept silent. In the first round of voting Paul Uddin got less votes and Dr Sam Abington got the highest votes and did not cross the 51% line, on 2nd of voting Onna king started getting all 2nd reference votes against Dr Sam Abington and Claude Morris got dropped on the 2nd round but on the final rounds Onna King got selected by the labour party local membership.
Majority of the Bengali party membership had a lack of vision and didn't mention or become a part of the mainstream politicians due to keeping line and connection with Bengali community where Bengali community expectation Bangladesh style politics by neglecting party system where majority Bengali community expect to elected Cllrs or MPS to attending all events that is including birthdays party and wedding party etc but they don't care about elected people doing or meataining their duties or responsibilities or they don't!
Still, our Bengali mainstream politicians are finding it difficult to bring themselves into part of the mainstream politics instead mixed up with both Bangladesh style politics!
