Hasina will form an opposition with independents!

January 07, 2024
This is the first time that the highest number of independent candidates have won in the elections held in Bangladesh. The number of independent elected members in the parliament is more than the opposition party of the last two times, the Jatiya Party. Several leaders of Jatiya Party lost to independent candidates of Awami League in the vacated seats for them by AL as well. The main leader of Jasod Hasanul Haque Inu, JP's Anwar Hossain Manju and several leaders of Workers' Party have also lost. Most of these independent winning candidates are leaders of Awami League and associated organizations. Due to this, there is a possibility that independent candidates will be the opposition party in the upcoming Parliament. Of course, many of these independent MPs may express interest in joining the government. Therefore, it remains to be seen who will form the opposition party in Parliament to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. However, in the interest of maintaining parliamentary politics, the government party can finally form an opposition party in the parliament with the leaders who have won independent elections by providing various opportunities. Bangladeshis largely stayed away from the vote on Sunday as initial signs suggested a low turnout, despite widespread reports of carrot-and-stick inducements aimed at bolstering the poll’s legitimacy. Anyway, Sheikh Hasina’s government will now have to tackle mounting economic and financial pressures, including rising inflation and falling foreign reserves, that have left many Bangladeshis disillusioned with her rule.
