"My friend Major Syed Mohammad Ziaul Haque is alive, Alhamdulillah. Sheikh Hasina’s government could not kill him by labeling him a terrorist."
Major Syed Mohammad Ziaul Haque. A nationalist and patriotic figure. However, he was labeled as a terrorist. With this terrorist tag, he was dismissed from the army. He fell victim to the wrath of the autocratic Sheikh Hasina government and was missing for a long time. His colleagues in the army, as well as his classmates, friends, and relatives, believed that he was dead; they thought he had been murdered. Others suspected that he had been abducted. For almost a decade, he was in hiding. No one could have imagined that he was still alive.
On October 30, following the release of a video by the patriotic and courageous journalist Elias Hossain, the name of Major Syed Mohammad Ziaul Haque surfaced. In the video, he first mentions Major Syed Mohammad Ziaul Haque. Highlighting his contribution, he mentions that Major Ziaul Haque was the only army officer who had attempted a coup to overthrow the illegal Sheikh Hasina government. However, the coup failed, and in the aftermath, he disappeared for a long time. In the nearly thirty-three-minutes video, he discusses various anti-national conspiracies of `Prothom Alo’ (The Bengali daily newspaper). The video went viral across social media. Following its release, Major Ziaul Haque’s name came back into the public discussion and became the talk of social media.
As a result, on November 4, the renowned Al Jazeera journalist Zulkarnaeen Shaer published an interview on his YouTube channel. This audio interview was with Major Syed Mohammad Ziaul Haque himself. In this interview, he shared detailed information about his personal life, education, career, and more. He began by praying for the souls of the martyrs of the July-August revolution.
Major Syed Mohammad Ziaul Haque’s friend, the famous film director Khijir Hayat Khan, who was from the 41st Long Course, wrote on his verified Facebook account: "My friend Major Syed Mohammad Ziaul Haque is alive, Alhamdulillah. Sheikh Hasina’s government could not kill him by labeling him a terrorist. Let's bring our boy back to life with honor for Bangladesh. May the 11 years of his fugitive life come to an end. That’s all I wish."
While discussions about Major Ziaul Haque were heating up across social media, at the same time, on November 4, Zulkarnaen Shaer, the famous journalist from Al Jazeera, published an interview with Major Ziaul Haque on his YouTube channel. The interview covered a wide range of topics, starting from his personal life, education, career, and more.
His teacher, Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Syed Ali Ahmed, said about him: "He was a brilliant officer of the Bangladesh Army. He was one of my favorite students. I saw Major Syed Mohammad Ziaul Haque during my twelve years as an instructor at the Bangladesh Military Academy (BMA). He was an ideal personality who combined intellect, wisdom, and character. During the reign of the previous autocratic government, I posted on Facebook asking for information about my beloved students Brigadier General Azmi and Major Zia. Zia was an extremely intelligent army officer. He was a young Sword of Honour officer and was very popular with his seniors. I believe he will return to the country and serve the people."
Regarding his son, Major Ziaul Haque’s father, Syed Zillul Haque, said: "On February 15, 2022, a journalist from `Prothom Alo’ forced me to give an interview and make negative statements about my son. Otherwise, I would have been subjected to torture or even imprisonment. A false report from `Prothom Alo’ destroyed my family’s life."
It is noteworthy that Major Syed Mohammad Ziaul Haque was a part of the 41st Long Course. In December 2011, the Awami League government labeled him a "terrorist" and dismissed him from the army. Later, in 2015, he was falsely implicated as a fugitive and sentenced to death in the murder case of the secular writer and blogger Avijit Roy, who was killed by radicals. The illegal government of Sheikh Hasina promised a reward of 2 million Bangladeshi Taka for his capture. However, all of these accusations were part of the conspiracies of the autocratic government. Major Syed Mohammad Ziaul Haque disappeared after falling victim to this deep conspiracy.
After the news about him resurfaced, the patriotic citizens had one question: `When will Major Syed Mohammad Ziaul Haque come out fully into the public?’ His friends, colleagues, classmates, and relatives all hope for his return..
