Bangladeshi authorities have pledged to seize funds in the UK linked to Tulip Siddiq, claiming they were acquired through global money laundering.
Senior officials from the country’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) say they are “actively working to repatriate” money allegedly siphoned by her aunt, Sheikh Hasina’s regime.
Akhtar Hossain, the ACC’s director general, stated that investigations into Sheikh Hasina’s family, including Ms. Siddiq, are ongoing, with multiple countries involved.
Nearly a month after resigning as City minister, Siddiq still faces scrutiny over her financial dealings and ties to Hasina’s authoritarian rule in Bangladesh. She stepped down after an ethics probe found she had inadvertently misled the public about a flat gifted to her by an Awami League associate.
Sheikh Hasina, 77, the longest-serving prime minister of Bangladesh, was ousted last August and is currently in India. Her rule saw allegations of mass repression, including the killing of 1,500 protesters and extrajudicial imprisonments.
The ACC has launched multiple investigations into Hasina, with Siddiq implicated in several cases. The most serious alleges their involvement in a £4 billion embezzlement scheme related to a nuclear power deal with Russia.
Mr. Hossain confirmed ongoing investigations into Siddiq and said the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit had been asked to submit a report.
“We are gathering evidence from foreign sources, including the UK and other countries. Initial findings indicate laundered funds have been transferred to multiple destinations,” he said.
Legal measures, including mutual legal assistance requests, are being pursued to recover assets. Investigators, supported by Britain’s National Crime Agency, visited Dhaka in October.
Hossain added that law enforcement agencies from the UK and the EU have pledged cooperation in repatriating funds, with discussions already underway.
A spokesperson for Siddiq dismissed the allegations, stating, “No evidence has been presented. Tulip Siddiq has not been contacted and completely denies these claims.”
