Police have launched an investigation into a serious act of vandalism after 85 graves were damaged in the Muslim section of Carpenders Park Lawn Cemetery in Watford. Hertfordshire Police reported that many of the affected graves are believed to be the resting places of babies and young children.

Wadi Funeralcare, which serves the cemetery, expressed heartbreak over what it described as a “desecration” and stated that “some graves were subjected to unspeakable acts of disrespect.” The discovery was initially made by a bereaved family who had recently laid a loved one to rest at the site. The funeral service provider said the family’s pain was deeply felt and extended gratitude to those who responded quickly and stood in solidarity with the affected families.

Hertfordshire Police have increased patrols in the area and issued an appeal for witnesses and any relevant information. Inspector Will Rogers-Overy stated that senior officers are working closely with local community leaders to identify and support the families most affected. He added that further engagement with the Muslim community will take place in the coming days, recognizing the particular impact this crime has had on them.

Although the cemetery is located in Watford, it is owned by Brent Council. Council leader Muhammed Butt expressed deep sympathy, saying, “Our thoughts are with the families of those whose graves were desecrated. I cannot imagine how they must be feeling at this moment.” He also said that the damage appears to be targeted, suggesting an Islamophobic hate crime, and promised that the council would work quickly to restore the site to a place of peace and remembrance once police complete their investigation.

Abbas Merali, a Conservative councillor from Three Rivers District Council, called the incident “a barbaric act,” emphasizing the deep distress and anguish it has caused to grieving families and the wider community.

Wadi Funeralcare reiterated the emotional toll the incident has taken, stating, “This incident has deeply shaken our community, but the swift response and shared outrage remind us of the strength we have when we stand together.”
